Thai visas & work permits for Australian citizens
Australians can visit Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism from 15 September 2026. Australians most often choose the retirement visa, marriage visa, DTV or the Non-B visa with a work permit for longer stays. Australian documents can be apostilled by DFAT once Thailand's accession takes effect on 28 February 2027.

Can Australian citizens enter Thailand without a visa?
30-day visa exemption (tourism)
From 15 September 2026 the former 60-day scheme was revoked. Ordinary passport holders are listed in the 30-day tourism exemption; visa-exempt entries over land are limited to twice per calendar year. Work, study or long stays require the proper visa.
Which Thai visa is best for Australian citizens?
- Retirement Visa (Non-Immigrant O / O-A)
Common with Australian retirees in Pattaya, Phuket and Chiang Mai.
- Marriage & Dependent Visa (Non-O)
For spouses of Thai nationals.
- Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
Suits remote workers in compatible time zones.
- Work Permit Eligibility: Reserved Jobs, Capital & Thai Staff Ratio
Check job and company rules before accepting an offer.
Work permits for Australian nationals
Australian tradespeople and divers should check early that their role is not on the list of occupations reserved for Thai nationals.

Do documents from Australia need an apostille or legalisation?
Australia is a party to the Apostille Convention. Thailand acceded on 30 June 2026 and the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027 — until then, Australia-issued documents still need legalisation by the Thai embassy or consulate; from that date an apostille from the competent Australia authority is expected to suffice.
Read our apostille guideCommon mistakes we see
- Superannuation statements that do not show regular income.
- Arriving visa-free and expecting to convert without the right documents.
- Accepting dive or hospitality jobs without a work permit.
