Thai visas & work permits for Chinese citizens

Chinese citizens can enter Thailand visa-free for short visits under the Thailand–China mutual visa-exemption agreement. For business, work or long stays, Chinese nationals typically use the Non-B visa with a work permit, the education visa, the LTR or the Privilege (Elite) programme. China joined the Apostille Convention in 2023.

Do documents from China need an apostille or legalisation?

China is a party to the Apostille Convention. Thailand acceded on 30 June 2026 and the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027 — until then, China-issued documents still need legalisation by the Thai embassy or consulate; from that date an apostille from the competent China authority is expected to suffice.

Common mistakes we see

  • Working on a visa-exempt entry, even short-term.
  • Notarial certificates from China without the right authentication before 28 February 2027.
  • Company documents that list a different job title from the work permit.

Frequently asked

Can I attend business meetings visa-free?
Short meetings are generally treated differently from work, but any actual work requires a Non-B visa and work permit. Ask us if unsure.
Is the Thailand Privilege card a residence permit?
No. It is a long-stay visa programme; it does not allow work and does not lead directly to permanent residence.
