Thai visas & work permits for German citizens

German citizens can visit Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism from 15 September 2026. For long stays, Germans most often use the retirement visa (O-A from Germany), the marriage visa, the DTV or the LTR visa. German civil documents are accepted after legalisation now and by apostille from 28 February 2027.

Can German citizens enter Thailand without a visa?

30-day visa exemption (tourism)

From 15 September 2026 the former 60-day scheme was revoked. Ordinary passport holders are listed in the 30-day tourism exemption; visa-exempt entries over land are limited to twice per calendar year. Work, study or long stays require the proper visa.

Do documents from Germany need an apostille or legalisation?

Germany is a party to the Apostille Convention. Thailand acceded on 30 June 2026 and the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027 — until then, Germany-issued documents still need legalisation by the Thai embassy or consulate; from that date an apostille from the competent Germany authority is expected to suffice.

Common mistakes we see

  • Führungszeugnis (police record) older than the issuing post accepts.
  • Pension statements only in German without certified translation.
  • Health-insurance certificates missing the required wording.

Counsel's note

We prepare German pension and insurance documents with certified English or Thai translations so the officer can read them without delay.

Service languages: English, German documents with translation.

Frequently asked

Do I need a German police record for a retirement visa?
For the O-A applied for abroad, a police record is generally required. For a Non-O converted inside Thailand it is usually not required.
Will an apostille replace embassy legalisation?
From 28 February 2027 an apostille from the German authority is expected to be accepted; until then legalisation is still needed.
