Thai visas & work permits for Russian citizens
Russian citizens enter Thailand visa-free for short stays under a bilateral agreement. Russians staying longer commonly use the DTV, the retirement visa, the education visa or the Privilege programme. Because of banking limits, proving finances is the main challenge, so plan the evidence before applying.

Can Russian citizens enter Thailand without a visa?
Thailand–Russia bilateral visa exemption
Russian ordinary passport holders are covered by a bilateral agreement; the Royal Thai Embassy in Moscow publishes the current details for travellers.
Which Thai visa is best for Russian citizens?
- Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
Used by Russian remote workers and IT specialists.
- Privilege / Elite Visa Advisory
An option when bank evidence is hard to provide.
- Retirement Visa (Non-Immigrant O / O-A)
With funds deposited in a Thai bank.
- Education Visa (Non-ED)
For language and Muay Thai study.
Work permits for Russian nationals
Russian IT specialists working for foreign clients usually fit the DTV rather than a work permit; working for a Thai company always needs a work permit.

Do documents from Russia need an apostille or legalisation?
Russia is a party to the Apostille Convention. Thailand acceded on 30 June 2026 and the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027 — until then, Russia-issued documents still need legalisation by the Thai embassy or consulate; from that date an apostille from the competent Russia authority is expected to suffice.
Read our apostille guideCommon mistakes we see
- Bank statements from sanctioned banks that cannot be verified.
- Overstay after flight cancellations.
- Using a tourist entry for remote work for Thai clients.
Counsel's note
