Thai visas & work permits for British citizens
British citizens can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism from 15 September 2026. Common long-stay routes are the retirement visa, the marriage visa for spouses of Thai nationals, the DTV for remote workers and the Non-B visa with a work permit. UK documents are apostilled by the FCDO.

Can British citizens enter Thailand without a visa?
30-day visa exemption (tourism)
From 15 September 2026 the former 60-day scheme was revoked. Ordinary passport holders are listed in the 30-day tourism exemption; visa-exempt entries over land are limited to twice per calendar year. Work, study or long stays require the proper visa.
Which Thai visa is best for British citizens?
- Retirement Visa (Non-Immigrant O / O-A)
Common for British pensioners; UK state pension evidence needs careful presentation.
- Marriage & Dependent Visa (Non-O)
Many UK nationals are married to Thai citizens.
- Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
For remote workers employed by UK companies.
- New Thai Work Permit Application
Required for teaching and other employment.
Work permits for British nationals
Teachers are one of the largest groups of British work-permit holders. Degree certificates and criminal-record checks usually need authentication; plan for the FCDO and embassy steps early.

Do documents from United Kingdom need an apostille or legalisation?
The United Kingdom is a party to the Apostille Convention. Thailand acceded on 30 June 2026 and the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027 — until then, the United Kingdom-issued documents still need legalisation by the Thai embassy or consulate; from that date an apostille from the competent the United Kingdom authority is expected to suffice.
Read our apostille guideCommon mistakes we see
- The UK no longer issues income letters for Thai visas — income must be shown in other ways.
- Teaching offers that arrive without a proper Non-B and work permit.
- Marriage certificates issued abroad that were never registered in Thailand.
Counsel's note
For British clients we focus on proving income or deposits with documents Thai immigration accepts, since the old embassy income letter is no longer available.
