Thailand Education Visa (Non-ED): Extension Limits, Attendance and School Checks

The Non-Immigrant ED visa lets you stay in Thailand while genuinely studying at a recognised institution. Under Immigration Bureau Order No. 12/2568, university and formal-school students can extend up to one year at a time, while language schools and other non-formal schools are limited to 90-day extensions and one year in total. Attendance is monitored and visas of students who do not attend can be revoked.

Which courses qualify

Degree programmes at universities, formal schools, Thai language schools and some vocational or skills courses, provided the institution holds current recognition from the relevant Thai education authority. The school's recognition, not its marketing, decides whether it can support your visa.

Extension ceilings

  • University and formal-school students: extensions of up to one year at a time while enrolled.
  • Language schools and other non-formal schools: 90 days per extension, up to one year in total from entry or from the date you changed to ED status.
  • Students in short university courses: separate limits set by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Attendance and enforcement

Schools report attendance, and immigration can test students on their progress at extension time. In 2025 authorities revoked a large number of student permits held by people who were not genuinely studying. Treat attendance as a legal condition, not a formality.

ED, DTV or something else?

If you mainly want to work remotely for clients abroad, the Destination Thailand Visa may fit better than ED. If you want to retire, marry or work for a Thai employer, other routes apply. Choose ED because you intend to study. Since 31 August 2026 (00:00 Thailand time), every DTV applicant must provide proof of permanent residence or nationality in the country of the embassy or consulate where they apply, replacing proof of current location, plus a police clearance certificate issued within 6 months of submission. Dependants under 16 may use the main applicant’s certificate. A visitor stay alone does not qualify you to apply at a regional post. Applications submitted before that date follow the old rules.

Common problems

  • Enrolling at a school that cannot support the visa.
  • Low attendance or failing a progress check at extension.
  • Working on an ED visa, which is not permitted without a work permit.
  • Assuming language-school extensions can continue beyond the one-year limit.

How we help

We check the institution's recognition, confirm which extension ceiling applies, prepare the extension file with the school's letters and attendance records, and advise on a better-suited visa where study is not your real purpose.
