Documents the DLT requires
- Passport with a valid visa or extension of stay, plus signed copies.
- Residence certificate from immigration, or an embassy letter confirming your address.
- Medical certificate issued recently by a Thai clinic or hospital.
- Your valid foreign driving licence with a certified Thai or English translation, if converting.
- An International Driving Permit, where held, as supporting evidence.
Conversion versus full testing
With a valid foreign licence you normally skip the written and practical driving tests but must still complete the colour-blindness, peripheral-vision, reaction and depth-perception checks at the DLT office. Without a foreign licence, or with one that cannot be verified, you take the full theory exam and practical test, which are offered in limited languages at larger offices.

The residence certificate step
The residence certificate is the document that surprises most applicants. Immigration offices issue it based on your TM.30 record, so your address notification must be current first. Some embassies issue an equivalent letter. Processing times vary by office, so start early.
Validity and renewal
A first Thai licence is typically issued for two years and can then be renewed for five years if your immigration status allows. Driving on an expired licence, or on a foreign licence alone beyond the accepted period, can void insurance after an accident.
How we help
We check that your TM.30 record supports a residence certificate, arrange certified translations of your foreign licence, book the DLT appointment and brief you on the checks you will face. The Department of Land Transport decides issuance.
