From Visa Exemption to a Long-Stay Visa: Your Options Inside and Outside Thailand

Visa-free entry gives only the stay allowed for your nationality: since 15 September 2026 the former 60-day exemption has been replaced by a 30-day tourism exemption for 60 countries and territories, a 15-day exemption for a shorter list, and Visa on Arrival for specified nationalities. Check your entry scheme and stamped expiry before planning an in-country conversion; eligibility for conversion is separate from entry eligibility. To stay long-term you either convert to a Non-Immigrant visa inside Thailand, where your circumstances and the local office allow it and enough days remain, or apply for a long-stay visa such as the DTV, LTR or a Non-Immigrant visa through the Thai e-Visa system from abroad. A one-time short extension of a visa-free stay is also often possible. Since 31 August 2026 (00:00 Thailand time), every DTV applicant must provide proof of permanent residence or nationality in the country of the embassy or consulate where they apply, replacing proof of current location, plus a police clearance certificate issued within 6 months of submission. Dependants under 16 may use the main applicant’s certificate. A visitor stay alone does not qualify you to apply at a regional post. Applications submitted before that date follow the old rules.

Route 1: extend the visa-free stay

Many nationalities can request a single extension of a visa-exempt stay at an immigration office. It buys time but does not create a long-stay status.

Route 2: change visa type inside Thailand

Some offices accept an application to change from visa-exempt status to a Non-Immigrant visa, for example for retirement or for a spouse of a Thai national, when the documents are complete and a minimum number of days remain on the current stay. Funds that must be held in a Thai bank for a set period make timing critical, so start early.

Route 3: apply from abroad

Long-stay options such as the Destination Thailand Visa, the Long-Term Resident visa and Non-Immigrant visas for work or study are usually applied for through the Thai e-Visa portal to the embassy or consulate responsible for where you live. This route avoids in-country conversion limits but needs a trip out.

How to choose

  • Retiring or married to a Thai national with funds ready: in-country change of visa type is often the most efficient.
  • Working remotely for clients abroad: DTV from abroad.
  • Employed by a Thai company: Non-B with a work permit, supported by the employer.
  • High-income or highly skilled professional: consider LTR eligibility.

How we help

We check the days left on your stay, which route your nationality and circumstances allow, and the practice of the office or embassy you will use, then prepare the file so you do not lose days to missing documents.

Frequently asked

Can every nationality change visa type inside Thailand?
No. Eligibility depends on nationality, the target visa and the office. Check before relying on it.
How many days must remain on my stay?
Offices usually require a minimum number of remaining days. Ask the responsible office in advance and do not file on your last days.
Is a visa-free stay enough to open a Thai bank account?
Bank policies vary and many require a long-stay visa or other documents. Ask the bank branch directly.
